Here the promised  example of   one of many  practical applications  of  NIRS  for intermuscular coordination we just finished  a few  hours ago.

his is  1/3  of  the  whole workout  and there  are certain  reasons   why we repeated  it 3  times  and   why we  had a  certain amount of loads in each  of the   sections.
This is  of no relevance to  what  I like to show. Start was 3 x 5 min loading  with a specific   performance  so  a  tuna 1/2/ a  and  then  double a, The whole  coordination workout  was in 2  a  load so no change the  whole time in the  workout   section  followed  by a  drop back to a  for some deoxygenation loads  with  low   intensity .
 doubel a  intensity is a   low homeostasis  intensity  for this  athlete, so no problem  to hold that  over  easy  60 plus minutes

The red lines  1 - 4  are  coordination challenges  ., 5 is a   O2 utilization challenge in a  very low  intensity.  The VL   in this athlete  is  for the   activity  we did  the clear  priority muscles and RF is  the lesser priority muscle but  could be used better  for what  he  was  or is doing. so the  first  15 min he   was  NOT  " thinking"  simply moving as usual.  than   we  stared the challenge.

 Challenge  1 red line. Take  VL  out of  the load  so reduce    work   from  VL but minatin RF load  so find another  way to  to maintain  load.  Than  try to recover back  to  NORM

2. maintain VL load  but increase  RF  load  above what you   do .
 Than recover.

3.Now  take load  of  VL  but   overload  RF  above NORM

4. load  both    above NORM

5   at  a load  so half  of   workout. 
desaturate  VL  for sure  down to lowest level of  the  full workout  if possible  with a  load  so same ass  at the start.  despite a very high HR.

Here a practical example  from cross country skiing I discussed yesterday  with a  coach  for  practical application in the field   and during workouts. Below  SmO2  reaction only  and it looks  pretty  good  as all   muscles seem to be involved similar  till to a  critical  intensity look  what I mean.

ow  here  why  when we sue in studies  just HHb  or  O2Hb  or  SmO2  and  equipment  are based on  SmO2 feedback only  we miss the major  feedback . That is  how  do we  supply  O2    and can we  still supply  O2  and hwo  do we get rid  of the  used  blood   CO 2 and more. 
That is where  tHb  and  load is so much more informative. You can see , where the " struggle  " actually started. ????? what  step/ time ( 4320  and  who in the intermuscular  coordination team started  to create a  problem  and who followed up  after  he  may have  started  to compensate.
This  datas are  from a  USA  cross country  coach. and belwo a  very small inside  view in the explanation and discussion  this datas  created  internally.

tri  and  quad info.jpg  so any polarisation  workout    will make  zero progress in this  situation   and in fact  based on the triceps  reactions  may  actually make it even worse.
Key  elements  are  cardiac CO  improvement  as a structural  goal  and an  intermuscular  review  of the technique  and a  review  of  the  strength ability in the  quadriceps  after the technical review   showed  no  actual problems.

The polarisation  problems  shows  up in the  development of  the upper  body  ability in many cross country skier.

upper body developpment.jpg    You  can easy see  why  the  Sleeping Giant is more and more in  the discussion and why  what we    or  many still consider enever a limitation CO2  release  may suddenly  be the reason of  no  progress in many athletes . 

Proper use  of NIRS in the field( Forget  5/1/5  really ) do it as you   work in the field  will tell you instantly  whether  today for example your respiration is the limiter. You may like  to have this  feedback and keep going as it is the  goal  to have  this  situation ( hypercapnia )or you may really like to avoid this , as  you have a very different goal  than hypercapnic  stimuli.

Here another intermuscular coordination  use  of  NIRS  rowing.

First  question. What  style  do you prefer.

Thna go  back to  the crosscountry section above and ask your self  what  will help more  SmO2  or  tHb ?

But  don't  do it on a  rowing  site  as they forget  the most important  section the  core ( diaphragm and intercostal muscles. Than  place  one on legs   one on core  and one on upper  body. ( Core   as well   erector  spinae. if  you  do not like  the intercostal placement.  But you miss   some feedback on respiration in the  full pattern of  the  rowing motion.
